1. What do you want for Christmas this year?

Not to forget anyone in the buying of presents. We keep telling everyone we don't want anything and we're only buying for the kids (we don't have any ourselves but we have seven nieces and nephews), but there's always someone...

2. Do you decorate a tree?

I try to avoid having a tree around. I'm 42 years old and a lot of the old Christmas excitement just isn't there.

3. Does it snow where you live?

Oh, yeah. We've got snow on the ground already.

4. Are you staying home or visiting family?

Home, though most of my family is nearby and some of Laura's family will be here for a brief visit.

5. Are you putting up Christmas lights?

On my street, you pretty much have to, though we're pretty restrained at our place. Real estate agents make a point of mentioning the Christmas lights business to prospective buyers. Not only do we get dozens of cars a night (more like hundreds during Christmas week), we get tour buses. Seriously. Google Taffy Lane and see for yourself.

It's a lot of fun, except when you can't get out of your driveway because of the traffic. And after New Year's, when the lights go off, the neighbourhood seems oppressively dark.

6. Do you make gingerbread houses?

No.

7. Do you even like gingerbread?

Sure, once in a while.

8. Do you get real Christmas trees or fake ones?

Fake.

9. Do you still believe in Santa Claus?

I don't even believe in God. Fortunately, Christmas doesn't have anything to do with religion.

10. What's your favorite Christmas song?

There's an old version of "Silver Bells" by someone I can't recall (Joni James? Patti Page?) that I quite like. "Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland" I like, too. I have no interest in rock or rap Christmas songs; I like old-fashioned Christmas music. The only Christmas albums we have are by Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra, though Perry Como is always a possibility (and so's Elvis, despite the no-rock rule).

11. Do you ever have Christmas parties?

Small get-togethers, occasionally.

12. Who do you usually spend Christmas with?

If we're here in Ottawa, Laura and I head ever to my parents' place, and my sister, her husband, and -- for the first time, this year -- their daughter come by for a few hours before or after they go to my brother-in-law's parents' place. If we're down in London, there is a great deal of running around to visit everyone, though we haven't done London for Christmas in some time. Winter driving across Canada is not always recommended.

13. Is Christmas your favorite holiday?

More days off work than any other holiday. Lots of pretty lights. Snow. It's a good holiday, sure.

14. What's your favorite part of Christmas?

Time off work, a bit of nostalgia for childhood, the happiness of being with family, especially Laura. And not having to go to church, being an adult and an atheist.

15. Do you have any special traditions?

Booze. Chocolate. Some Christmas-themed old movie is always a nice thing to work in, too, like The Shop Around the Corner or Remember the Night.

16. Who do you want to be stuck under the mistletoe with?

Laura.
